Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) follows the return of the well-loved acapella group, the Bellas, on their senior year to battle for a prestigious international acapella competition, which no American team has ever won. Pitch Perfect 2 delivers its promise of nasty humor and singing showdown, but leaves little to the depth of its plot.
Thanks to the brilliant performance of Rebel Wilson as Fat Amy, the movie was able to sustain an energetic flow of excitement from beginning to end. However, the movie does not quite hit the high notes I was expecting from it. While the first movie tried to make its characters someone you can relate to, Pitch Perfect 2 did very little to character development and instead went on with the loser-group-trying-to-win-a-contest-for-redemption formula.
Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) remains a movie I would recommend, especially since we, as a people, love singing. Sure enough, you would feel like waving the Philippine flag when Manila gets mentioned (although in reference to a joke about ladyboys) and when the younger Valenciano gets a brief share of the limelight. The chemistry of the Bellas is something this movie is relying on.
While the entire movie failed to live up to my expectation, I loved the humor and the last part which would make you reach for a pack of tissues. Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) is a perfect example of how a good franchise is ruined by a lack of interest in developing its story and instead just hoping the names of good actors could make up for the bad writing.
My rating for Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) is 4/5 stars.
