The School of Good and Evil is a refreshing story about unlikely friends, Sophie and Agatha, as they journeyed out of the village of Gavaldon and into The School of Good and Evil, where fairy tales come true. Although one has to be kidnapped by the Headmaster to get admitted to the school, Sophie has prepared for it all her life. She wanted to be a real-life princess in her own fairy tale. Part of her good deeds was to befriend Agatha. However, when the night of kidnapping came and the two were chosen, it came as a surprise to Sophie that she was to be a part of The School of Evil or the Nevers and Agatha, who had seen herself fit for The School of Evil suddenly found herself in The School of Good. With the cruel turn of events, Sophie struggles for redemption by trying to change her own fairy tale and fate.
Soman Chainani delivers well with wittily-constructed dialogues between the characters. Sophie and Agatha stand out in a story that echoes the well-crafted Disney princess stories. The School of Good and Evil is an instant classic from a master storyteller comparable to Roald Dahl and Cornelia Funke. It asks every page to be turned and does not disappoint until the very end.
The film rights of The School of Good and Evil has already been bought by Universal Studios for a planned trilogy. Its author, a summa cum laude Harvard graduate, will have more readers cheering him on for more great books to come.
I rate The School of Good and Evil 4.5/5 stars.
